"You cannot look at a sleeping cat and feel tense."
  ~~Jane Pauley
It's raining,
and the forecast says it will rain all day.
She knows exactly what to do on a rainy day.
She teaches me well.
And for now, she is my best friend,
and she tells me every hour that everything will be alright...

Checking in...
"We, as a wrestling community, better remember it is more than one individual that makes a winner."
  ~~Dan Gable

First Match...
Second match...
Third match...
Friday afternoon I rushed home from subbing in Mattoon to watch Shelbyville High School wrestle Warrensburg, Clinton, and Tolono.  Shelbyville beat all three teams, and Garrett won all three of his matches. A good night for a great group of boys.

"Volleyball is one of the most interactive games going. It is a game of intuition, imagination, improvisation - but most of all, of reciprocity - of teamwork. There is no way to free-lance in volleyball. "
  ~~Marv Dunphy
I traveled to Tuscola to watch Miss Ashton play an 8th grade home volleyball game.
So proud of #17. Her attitude and sportsmanship is the best!

Library of Sounds

Again the early-morning sun was generous with its warmth.
All the sounds dear to a horseman were around me -
the snort of the horses as they cleared their throats,
the gentle swish of their tails, the tinkle of irons as we flung the saddles over their backs -
little sounds of no importance,
but they stay in the unconscious library of memory.
  ~~Wynford Vaughan-Thomas
When we had our horses,
one of the things i always anticipated was the nicker I heard as I pushed back the bolt on the barn door.
They would slowly move in their bedding toward their feed buckets knowing that breakfast was coming, along with a hug around their warm necks...

Peeks of Blue

"Agriculture ...
is our wisest pursuit, because it will in the end contribute most to real wealth, good morals & happiness."
  ~~
Extract from Thomas Jefferson to George Washington, 14 Aug. 1787
An early evening trip to the cabin found me hopeful as the gray clouds were parting and showing glimpses of blue sky.
Unloading a car filled with tubs of Christmas decorations had to wait.
A walk behind the barn took priority so I could shoot this scene with the hues of blue and gray.

January is almost over.

Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only.
Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.
  ~~Coco Chanel
Linen, silver, opera gloves, tuxedos, fur jackets, wedding dresses...
Since the first of the year, I've been slowly cleaning out drawers, trunks, cedar chests...
and the attic.

I can only do a little each day.
Much of it is going,
donating to charities, selling it online, boxing it for family rummage sales,
and today I took a carload to the Little Theater on the Square in Sullivan, Illinois.
All of the "dress-up" clothes from my children which included grass skirts, Hawaiian shirts, cowboy hats, vintage clothes, tuxedos, dinner jackets, and all of the "prairie clothes" that were popular in the early 80's.

I'm cautious.
I don't want to give away all of my memories.
It seems like I have to touch everything, and think about its story while deciding its fate.
A last minute text to my niece saved these opera gloves that belonged to my mother-in-law.
They've been carefully washed and are packed to be sent in the morning mail.
A little each day.
I've given myself one year to pare down my life.
In the end, the most precious things I have are my family and my memories of those I love...

Shannnon, Ashton, and Sydney joined me to walk the annual luminary walk on the Dacey Trail.
Cups ot chocolate and hot apple cider warmed cold fingers, while a huge bonfire warmed cold toes.
Linked arm-in-arm walking 2.5 miles warmed my heart...

"The one thing that can solve most of our problems is dancing."
  ~~James Brown
Shannon and Mike had planned a date for tonight,
and while they were gone,
I took on the responsibility of delivering,
taking pictures,
and picking up Ashton from her 8th Grade Dance at Northward Middle School in Tuscola.

Chautauqua Pony

“Some places speak distinctly.
Certain dank gardens cry aloud for a murder;
certain old houses demand to be haunted;
certain coasts are set apart for shipwrecks.”
  ~~Robert Louis Stevenson
With the Christmas carousel pony no longer lit,
it seems very misplaced next to the side door of the old Chautauqua Building...
