"A sap-run is the sweet good-by of winter. It is the fruit of the equal marriage of the sun and frost.”
~~John Burroughs, Signs and Seasons, 1886
The sap is running and they have tapped the maples.
A bucket of sweet goodness...

"I'm convinced that every boy, in his heart, would rather steal second base than an automobile." First base... Safely back to first... Stealing second... At shortstop. Garrett's a junior now.
It seems whatever sport he is playing, that is his favorite... ~Nancy (Nana) ~ 89/365 "It is well that war is so terrible, or we would grow too fond of it." My husband is from Pennsylvania and both his maternal and paternal great-grandfathers fought in the Civil War. As we were packing up my mother-in-law's belongings helping her move from her home in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, we found an old box with a hat inside. Lifting the lid, we discovered it was the cap from the uniform of the Civil War veteran's organization, the Grand Army of the Republic. A scrolled document confirmed it belonged to John I. Sims, my father-in-law's grandfather. My sister-in-law thought I should take it since I taught American history and have always been interested in "The War Between the States". I took the box and the hat home, and I kept it safe in my cedar chest for many years.
Then one Memorial Day, I needed a picture. I thought of the scrolled document and the hat, and took out the box. As I carefully lifted out the hat, I found another hat tucked inside. It was John Sim's uniform cap and was in perfect condition having been stored safely inside for more than 100 years. I packed up both hats and the documents this week. They have a new home with my niece and her son. Alex who is fascinated by anything military. He doesn't know it's going to arrive, and she promised to take pictures when he opens the box. I hope to share... ~Aunt Nancy ~ 84/365 "A smile is the light in your window that tells others that there is a caring, sharing person inside." State Medalists. One was earned playing as hard as she could, and the other was earned encouraging and cheering from the bleachers. (Actually he is Mr. Smith, the superintendent a.k.a. Ashton's Dad.) She is always smiling... Her best serve... The 2015 Tuscola East Prairie Hornets are the first team to bring home a medal at the state level... Congratulations with a medal. It takes a team, the coaches, and the fans...
~Nancy ~ Grandma Mi~83/365 "Every problem has in it the seeds of its own solution. I know I will be pulling the little vines that will grow from these seeds in the spring.
There is no way to contain them on this windy March day. ~Nancy ~ 82/365 “Living in a small town...is like living in a large family of rather uncongenial relations. I remember when this water tower was the biggest news in town.
That was forty years ago... ~Nancy ~ 80/365 "Your attitude is like a box of crayons that color your world. The walls at North Ward School in Tuscola are filled with color.
We are all so thankful for Mrs. Flavin and the Students of North Ward Elementary for bringing color to our world during the bleakest of gray days... ~Nancy ~ 79/365 "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." I can think of many people whose response would be, "Whatever..." I've been folding socks with the "army fold and roll" since I was old enough to fold socks. It was our culture. The only trouble was that the "folded over" sock was always sort of stretched out on the top even before you wore it. This little gem of a YouTube video was lurking on the sidebar begging me to watch. It was grouped in with the Konmari videos, and it reminds me of origami + folding socks. On this rainy, dreary, sort of very gray day, I refolded some socks. I bring to you my "thing of beauty". ~Nancy ~ 78/365 “The earth laughs in flowers.” On Monday they were miniature suns open and bright.
Today they are all closed up waiting for spring to return... ~Nancy ~ 77/365 |
