Winter Solstice Crocus

Picture
"The winter solstice has always been special to me as a barren darkness that gives birth to a verdant future beyond imagination, a time of pain and withdrawal that produces something joyfully inconceivable, like a monarch butterfly masterfully extracting itself from the confines of its cocoon, bursting forth into unexpected glory."
  ~~Gary Zukav
The El Niño has produced a most unusual fall,
and today we celebrated the winter solstice.
Mother Nature needs to "chill out".
The crocus are peeking out from the warm black soil in my garden...

"Derive happiness in oneself from a good day's work, from illuminating the fog that surrounds us."
  ~~Henri Matisse
The warmth of this December keeps the fog suspended over our mornings and the lake disappears until the afternoon...

Oberreifenberg

Our second day in Germany consisted of a trip into the Taunus Mountains to the village where Mom was born and our ancestral home.
Sturms and Meisters have lived here since the Middle Ages.

St. Georg Kirche

Located in the highest village in the Taunus Mountains, this is the church where my mother's family celebrated baptisms, first communions, and marriages.

Burgruine Oberreifenberg

These are the ruins of the fortress that was built in the middle ages.
A copy of a sign documenting the history can be found at:

More information about the fortress ruins:

This family visited and filmed the Oberreifenberg Tower in the spring of 2015. Unfortunately, I can't speak Russian, so I don't know what she is saying in the video. I can tell you that little has changed from when we used to climb it, and according to my Uncle Walter who climbed it often as a young child, there are 88 steps to the top.

Bassenheimer Palais

This building was commissioned by Count Casimir Ferdinand Adolf Waldbott of Bassenheim the court architect, and was built by Benedict Burtscher in the first half of the 18th century. It was the count's administrative headquarters of the Office Reifenberg.

Family Homes

We did our best to find the family homes that we remembered visiting while growing up In Germany.

Oberreifenberg Scenes

Just a few of the sights on the streets of Oberreifenberg.

Oberreifenberg Friedhof

We spent the last part of our visit walking through the cemetery. The old friedhof chapel has been replaced with a modern open structure, but each grave is still cared for beautifully and flowers are still blooming as autumn is still full of sunny days.

Diana and I took the train from Frankfurt to Oberursel where we rented a car. We took time this afternoon to drive through and explore our beloved "Camp King".

The Former Apartment Buildings

There are only two of the original apartment buildings left.
The second building is behind this one.
This used to be Bldg. 1049.

Bad Homburg vor der Höhe

We landed mid-morning in Frankfurt, and after catching the train to our Frankfurt hotel to leave our suitcases, we walked back to the train station and rode the short trip to our "hometown" of Bad Homburg.

We had just entered the church to find they were tuning the organ.
The music was beautiful as they played through an entire hymn.
I wish I had thought of recording it earlier, but you can still get the feel of the magnificance of the sound.

Bravery is about a willingness to show emotional need."

"Looking back, there is nothing wrong with that peace, love and equality that the hippies espoused.
In many ways, we have regressed because they were into organic food,
back to nature,
make love not war,
be good to all men,
share and share alike - which is what many are talking about now."
  ~~Imelda Staunton

I found these berries on a walk along the Tualatin Hills Park Trail.
I've never seen it in the Midwest, but found it on a website listed as a "poisonous plant of Alaska".

Diana, Mom, and I went out for lunch at Elephant's Delicatessen this afternoon.
With the sun shining and the blue sky, we took advantage of lunch in the Garden Room.
This makes me happy...

"It gives the supreme touch of grandeur to all the main Columbia views, rising at every turn, solitary, majestic, awe-inspiring, the ruling spirit of the landscape."
  ~~John Muir
Thank you to the pilot as we were descending to land in Portland.
"I'll try to get you a good shot of Mt. Hood with the sun setting."

It's the little things that are the big things...
