“The earth has music for those who listen.” Everywhere you turned, you would find artists capturning the beauty of the Rockies. Thank you, Cecy Turner, for saying, "Yes," when I asked to take your picture. I am in awe of your art... www.cecyturner.com ~Nancy ~ 268/365

To watch the bull elk this time of year is a show of high drama. They are exhausting. Keeping their ladies together away from the other bulls, keeping other bulls away from their ladies, fighting off other bulls, and attracting more to their harem. Nature really is spectacular in her decision to choose the strongest... ~Nancy ~ 266/365
“Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out going to the mountains is going home; Sunrise at Lake Sprague. Early morning aspens ~Nancy ~ 264/365
"Elk were named by the early settlers, Our first encounter with an elk was high in the mountains. Several cars were pulled over and when we slowed down, they told us there was a bull elk in a wallow. He had just gone down when I got there with my camera. Our little band of observers watched and explained in hushed tones what he was doing. After he rolled and rolled around, he finally stood up. I was told that the girls like this look. A lot. And if that wasn't enough, he started "horning". They try to get as much "stuff" up into their antlers to make them look bigger. The girls are impressed. A lot. He slowly walked away bugling loudly. Girls, he thinks he is pretty hot stuff. Good luck...

"How and where people play determines the character of individuals and the destiny of their country. We headed into Rocky Mountain National Park taking a road that went... UP! UP! We had not yet reached the highest elevation on the road. That was a bit later. 12,183 ft. Take a DEEP breath! And don't look down as you drive along the edge. At that point, I wasn't only breathing deeply. I was in meditation mode. Rocky Mountain High... One of several elk we saw along our trip.

When we read that it was the largest city in northwestern Kansas with a population of 20,000, we thought it was our best option for a bed, food, and fuel. Five minutes in the hotel was all we needed to find some "Kansas Sights". We visited "Old Fort Hays" where a few buildings have been preserved. Below is one of two of the Officers' Quarters complete with outbuildings behind it. Plymouth School has been moved and restored on the grounds of Fort Hays State University. The schoolhouse stood empty and quiet, as did the university, but I was able to take pictures through the windows of the old school to get a glimpse of what 1874 education looked like on the grasslands of Kansas. ~Nancy ~ 256/365
"I love sporting events and popcorn and pizza and being outside, like at a baseball or football game. Friday night.
Football games and the smell of popcorn. This little guy discovered popcorn and how good it is when you stuff it in your mouth and tip your head back to keep every morsel from falling out. He's a natural... ~Nancy ~255/365 "I had daydreams and fantasies when I was growing up. An abandoned cabin in the woods.
I can see from the carving over the doorway who built it. But I can't understand why it was abandoned. Brothers? Cousins? Grandfather, father and son? It must contain some sweet, sweet memories... ~Nancy ~ 254/365 |
