Osage Orange

Picture
The Osage Orange tree has been planted and used by early settlers as natural fence rows and for the strong wood.
"Its great strength enabled it to bear heavy loads, while its flexibility made it relatively easy to bend into the circle of a wheel rim and also gave it the capacity to absorb shock without cracking or splitting. Those properties, added to the wood's ability to resist the effects of soil and moisture, made for high-mileage wheel rims."
  ~~By Dave Wayman (March/April 1985)
Today the Osage Orange provides cover for wildlife,
which is exactly what it does along the edges of the fields and pastures of Shelby County.
Here the green fruit stands out among the brown leaves of autumn.

"I  love everything that's old,
old friends,
old times,
old manners,
old books,
old wine."

An old desk and old books.
I love the way my father's books look in the morning sun...

"There  is one day that is ours.
Thanksgiving Day is the one day that is purely  American."
~~O.  Henry
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday.
It's all about family, friends, and food.
It's that simple...

"I'm  really a scientist.
I follow recipes exactly - until I decide not to.
And then  I'll follow something else exactly.
I may decide I could turn this peach tart  into a plum tart,
but if I'm following a recipe,
I follow it  exactly."
~~Ina  Garten
When I first made this cake, I grated the carrots by hand.
It usually involved scraped knuckles and some bleeding.
The recipe has changed over the years,
and it is much quicker and easier to make with blenders and food processors.
Can I say that I love baby carrots?
But I have to still use my old hand-mixer and my old cake pan.
And the recipe card is now just a check-off list to make sure I have everything on the counter that I need.
This cake just seems like it fits this time of year...

"A University springing up in the grove as if Mother Earth had given it birth...
Chautauqua has become the school for the masses..."
  ~~Rev. H. H. Moore from "Retrospect"
"The Chautauqua Auditorium, built in 1903, is a large historic icosagonal
(20-sided) wooden chautauqua meeting hall located at Forest Park
and North East 9th Street, Shelbyville, Illinois, United States. On January 30, 1978, it was added
to the National Register of Historic Places.
It is the largest building of its kind anywhere in the world. The building
was constructed by a local bridge builder and designed with a unique system of
structural support. Because of this, there are no interior pillars to block the
view of the stage.
The large stage features three female Grecian statues representing Art, Music
and Drama. These statues were works from renowned Illinois artist and
Shelbyville native Robert Root."

With the help from the citizens of Shelbyville,
the future of the famous Chautauqua Building
is a bit brighter...

Today, with the wind, it was cold.
The air was November crisp,
and as dusk began to ascend,
I hurried to our barn to get a picture of it with the reflecting hues of the pink setting sun.

IN MEMORIAM
JFK
"Prayerfully, Vincenettes listen to T.V. and
radio reports in disbelief as J.F. Kennedy
writes in his own blood the final chapter in
his Profiles in Courage, November 22, 1963.

As the impossible becomes history, all ask
with stunned and questioning faces, not what
their country can do for them, but what can
they do, with God's help, for their country.
and each other in this time of crisis and
personal loss.

Grief stricken, but filled with his undying
strength and famous "vigor," all begin
to realize that his profile, his courage,
and his work, must now truly be their own.

    Vincenettes join their prayers to
those of people all over the world:
MAY HE REST IN PEACE!"

"All human wisdom is summed up in  two words; wait and hope."
  ~~Alexandre Dumas
Today I "subbed" in Mrs. Stricklin's class.
I caught this young lady with her fingers crossed as I drew names for the "Big Prize" at the end of the day.
