The Ultimate Power

Knowledge is power.
  ~~Francis Bacon

This afternoon we watched Joel compete with his team in a triangular meet against Clinton and Central A&M. I loved watching these 7th grade junior-varsity students answer questions across all subject areas with sports and entertainment added to the mix.

A subscription to "People" magazine could be included as a good study guide, as well.

The quote from Francis Bacon is one of my favorites.
It hung on a banner from the ceiling of my classroom for the first twenty years that I taught.

"So please, oh PLEASE, we beg, we pray,
Go throw your TV set away,
And in its place you can install,
A lovely bookshelf on the wall."

~~Roald Dahl, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

This morning I taught in the Resource Room at Main Street School in Shelbyville.
My own children remember these closets well,
as it was inside these doors where they hung their coats many years ago.

Today you can still see the hooks where the coats were hung.
In this room, though, the closets have been transformed into reading nooks where children can escape into the pages of their books.

“Daffy-down-dilly came up in the cold,
Through the brown mould.

Although the March breeze blew keen on her face,
Although the white snow lay in many a place.”

Barn Window

Before the sun set,
I returned to yesterday's barn to photograph it again.

With the melting snow,
I was able to walk around it a little more.
On the south side I found this wonderful old window.

While many of our old barns are collapsing, or are beyond repair,
this old barn is standing firm.

Our first snow day,
and every kid in Shelbyville knows the best place to be is

sledding down the side of the Dam Hill.

Feeding Frenzy

The snow began flying shortly before school was dismissed,
and as the day began to come to an end,
the backyard birds fought for the last seeds in the feeders.

Tomorrow the feeders will be filled again...

The Old Pana Railroad Tower

When a woman gets the blues she hangs her little head and cries.
When a woman gets the blues she hangs her little head and cries.
But when a man gets the blues he grabs a train and rides.

Every time I see that lonesome railroad train,
Every time I see that lonesome railroad train,
It makes me wish I was going home again...
~~"Train Whistle Blues" by Jimmie Rodgers ~ 1929

The sun was trying its hardest to break through the clouds.
I drove to Pana, Illinois, to spend the day outside before the snow and the ice hit Central Illinois.

Pana was founded on the railroad and the coal industries.
Driving around town,
I found this old train tower.
It once served four major railroads:
   the Illinois Central,
   the Chicago & Eastern Illinois,
   the B & O,
   and the New York Central.

The towers once served as the operational hub at many railroad locations, and kept the trains moving. Without them, trains would have backed up in short order if the train crews had to go out and align all of the switches for a particular move.

Today this old tower stands quietly in its retirement...

Fenwick High School

We spent the day at Fenwick High School providing iPad training to the teachers and staff at this Oak Park institution.

Fenwick was founded in 1929, and we were told that it isn't uncommon to meet people all over the world that have graduated from Fenwick.

We presented three sessions, and felt very welcome in the very "Windy City"...
