I always enjoy going "home".
Turning the key of the classroom door and walking into the room felt very familiar.
Riddle is a beautiful new school that opened in 2003,
and when we moved into it from our old school buildings,
we felt like our "dreams had come true".
Today, though, after school,
I found myself at the empty spot where the old Bennett School in Mattoon once stood.
I did my "student teaching" at Bennett on the second floor,
and I can remember clearly the the wooden floors and the old granite steps that were worn in the middle.
Today a brick memorial garden holds the remains of Bennett School on the lot where it once stood near Lytle Park.
Nearby, the flag still flies on the flagpole that once witnessed thousands of students enter and leave the door of that old school.
